Can I Buy Shares in Primark?
Not directly. Primark isn't listed — it's owned by Associated British Foods, which trades on the London Stock Exchange as ABF. Buying ABF is the only way to get exposure to Primark.

You're buying far more than Primark
This catches people out. ABF is a sprawling group, and Primark is only part of it. The same company also owns:
- Twinings tea
- Kingsmill bread
- Silver Spoon sugar
- Jordans and Ryvita
- A large agriculture and ingredients business
So a share in ABF gives you a slice of a global food and ingredients group that happens to own a fashion retailer. Sugar prices and grocery margins can move the share price as much as Primark's takings do.
Why it matters
It's the clearest example of the subsidiary pattern: the brand you want isn't the thing you'd own. Before buying a parent company for exposure to one division, it's worth checking how much of the group that division actually represents — and being comfortable holding the rest.
ABF is UK-listed, so it's straightforward to buy through any share dealing account or stocks and shares ISA — but we don't recommend individual shares, and concentrating money in one company carries real risk.
How to check whether any company is listed
The same three checks work for any name you're curious about:
- Search the company plus "investor relations". Listed companies always have an investor relations page; private ones don't.
- Look for a ticker and an exchange — something like LSE, NYSE, NASDAQ or TYO followed by a short code. No ticker, no shares to buy.
- Check who the parent is. Plenty of famous brands are subsidiaries. You often can't buy the brand, but the parent may well be listed.
If a company is private, the only routes in are usually employee schemes, or a stake being sold to institutions — neither of which is open to ordinary investors.
Frequently asked questions
Is Primark listed on the stock market?
No. Primark is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, which is listed in London under ABF. There are no separate Primark shares.
What else does Associated British Foods own?
Twinings, Kingsmill, Silver Spoon, Jordans and Ryvita among others, plus a substantial agriculture and ingredients business.
Is buying ABF the same as investing in Primark?
No. Primark is one division of a much larger group, so the share price reflects the whole business, not just the retailer.
