Where the data comes from

Everything here is derived from official sources, published under the Open Government Licence: house prices from the HM Land Registry UK House Price Index, council tax from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, earnings and the long-run price index from the Office for National Statistics.

Our contribution is the compilation: joining the datasets, deriving the rankings and ratios, and presenting them so a figure can be found in seconds rather than in a spreadsheet. Each page states its own method, including where we have made a choice that produces different numbers from other published tables.

Journalists and researchers

Please use these figures. Each page carries a suggested citation and states its sources, limitations and update date. Every table lists all its rows on a single page, so a deep link will not break, and the figures are in the HTML rather than loaded by script.

If you need a cut we do not publish — a specific region, a longer time series, a different breakdown — it is very likely already in the underlying data, so do ask.
