Can I Buy Shares in John Lewis?
No. John Lewis has no shares to buy, because it's owned by its own staff. The John Lewis Partnership — which includes Waitrose — is held in a trust on behalf of its employees, known as Partners. There's no listing and no ticker.

How the Partnership works
Every permanent employee is a Partner and a beneficiary of the trust that owns the business. Profits are shared with Partners rather than external shareholders — historically through an annual bonus, though that depends on how the business performs and has been passed over in leaner years.
Crucially, Partners don't hold shares they can sell. It's a beneficial interest in a trust, not equity with a market value. You can't buy in by getting a job, and Partners can't cash out.
Could that ever change?
The model has been debated publicly, including reports of exploring outside investment. The Partnership has continued as an employee-owned business, and nothing about that structure gives ordinary investors a route in.
If you want exposure to UK retail, listed options include Tesco, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer and Next — all very different businesses from an employee-owned partnership.
How to check whether any company is listed
The same three checks work for any name you're curious about:
- Search the company plus "investor relations". Listed companies always have an investor relations page; private ones don't.
- Look for a ticker and an exchange — something like LSE, NYSE, NASDAQ or TYO followed by a short code. No ticker, no shares to buy.
- Check who the parent is. Plenty of famous brands are subsidiaries. You often can't buy the brand, but the parent may well be listed.
If a company is private, the only routes in are usually employee schemes, or a stake being sold to institutions — neither of which is open to ordinary investors.
