Who owns Liverpool
FSG bought the club in 2010 and also owns other sports businesses. Because FSG is private, there's no listing, no ticker and no way for an ordinary investor to buy in — even indirectly.
The club was listed on the London Stock Exchange briefly in the 1990s, but that's long gone. Occasional reports of investors taking minority stakes involve institutions buying into FSG privately, which isn't open to the public either.
The one you can buy
Manchester United remains the notable exception in English football, listed in New York under MANU. Elsewhere in Europe, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Celtic are listed.
If it's the club you love rather than the returns, a share in a listed club is a novelty rather than a sensible investment — football clubs rarely pay dividends and their share prices are driven by sentiment, takeover rumour and results.
How to check whether any company is listed
The same three checks work for any name you're curious about:
- Search the company plus "investor relations". Listed companies always have an investor relations page; private ones don't.
- Look for a ticker and an exchange — something like LSE, NYSE, NASDAQ or TYO followed by a short code. No ticker, no shares to buy.
- Check who the parent is. Plenty of famous brands are subsidiaries. You often can't buy the brand, but the parent may well be listed.
If a company is private, the only routes in are usually employee schemes, or a stake being sold to institutions — neither of which is open to ordinary investors.
