What Is Klarna on My Bank Statement?

A Klarna charge is an instalment on something you bought using buy now, pay later. That's why it turns up weeks after you shopped and for only part of what you spent — Klarna splits the cost and collects it in stages.

Why the timing feels random

With Pay in 3, Klarna takes the first payment around the time of purchase and the rest at roughly monthly intervals. With Pay in 30 days, nothing leaves your account until the month is up. Either way, the debit lands well after the shopping trip that caused it — and often alongside instalments from other, unrelated orders.

How to see what each payment is for

Open the Klarna app and check Payments. Every order shows the retailer, the total, what's been paid and what's still to come, so you can match each statement line to a purchase.

Worth knowing

Missed Klarna payments can be reported to credit reference agencies, so a forgotten instalment isn't harmless — see does Klarna affect your credit score. If money is tight, Klarna would rather rearrange than see you default; contact them before the payment date.

What if you don't recognise it?

Don't panic, but don't ignore it either. Work through this order:

  • Check who else uses the card — a partner, or a child on a family account, is the most common explanation.
  • Look for a matching subscription or order in the relevant app or account.
  • Search the exact descriptor as it appears, including any * or reference number.
  • Still unexplained? Contact your bank straight away. Report it as an unrecognised transaction — under UK rules you're generally protected against unauthorised payments, and your bank can freeze the card and investigate.

Never phone a number that appears in the transaction itself, and never share a one-time passcode with anyone who calls you — including someone claiming to be your bank.

Frequently asked questions

Why has Klarna taken money weeks after I bought something?

Because buy now, pay later spreads the cost. Later instalments are collected automatically on their due dates, long after the purchase itself.

Can I stop a Klarna payment?

You can't simply cancel it — the debt is still owed. Contact Klarna through the app if you need to change a payment date, and speak to them early if you can't pay.
