When Is the Lifetime ISA Bonus Paid?
The 25% government bonus on a Lifetime ISA is paid monthly — but not on the day you pay in. In practice it usually lands four to nine weeks later, and exactly when depends on which side of the 5th of the month your payment falls.
Here's the actual HMRC timetable, so you can work out the date rather than guess.
At a glance
- Bonus rate
- 25% of what you pay in
- Maximum
- £1,000 a year (on £4,000)
- Paid
- Monthly, in arrears
- Typical wait
- About 4–9 weeks
The timetable HMRC actually works to
Three fixed steps decide your date:
- The claim period. HMRC groups payments by a month that runs from the 6th of one month to the 5th of the next. Your payment falls into whichever of those windows it lands in.
- Your provider claims. After that window closes, your provider submits the claim to HMRC. The deadline is the 20th of the following month.
- HMRC pays, your provider credits you. The money goes to your provider, who then adds it to your account, usually within a few working days.
That's why the wait feels long: the clock doesn't start when you pay in — it starts when your claim period closes.
A worked example
Say you pay £1,000 in on 10 March:
- Your payment sits in the claim period 6 March – 5 April.
- Your provider claims it by 20 April at the latest.
- HMRC pays, and your provider credits your account — so the £250 typically appears in late April or during May.
Now pay the same £1,000 in on 4 April instead. That falls in the previous window (6 March – 5 April), so it's claimed a whole month earlier. Paying in on the 4th rather than the 6th can bring your bonus forward by roughly a month.
Why it might be slower than you expect
- You paid in just after the 5th — you've just missed a window and joined the next one.
- Your provider claims early in the window rather than late, or the reverse.
- It's the start of a new tax year, when volumes are highest.
- Your account is new and still being verified.
If nothing has arrived after about nine weeks, contact your provider first — they can see whether the claim was submitted and accepted.
The one that really matters: buying a home
If you're using the Lifetime ISA to buy your first home, the bonus must be in your account before your conveyancer requests the funds. Money paid in shortly before completion may not have attracted its bonus yet — and you can't complete and collect it afterwards.
So if you're within a couple of months of buying, pay in early, and tell your solicitor what's still pending. It's the single most common way people lose out on a bonus they'd otherwise have earned.
What the bonus is paid on
The 25% applies to what you pay in, up to £4,000 in a tax year — so a maximum of £1,000 a year. It isn't paid on interest or investment growth.
Once the bonus is in the account it's treated like the rest of your money: it earns interest in a cash LISA, or is invested in a stocks and shares one, and it counts towards your balance for a house purchase.
Remember the £4,000 also counts towards your overall £20,000 ISA allowance for the year.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Lifetime ISA bonus take?
Typically four to nine weeks. HMRC works to claim periods running from the 6th of one month to the 5th of the next, and your provider has until the 20th of the following month to claim — so a payment made just after the 5th waits longest.
Is the Lifetime ISA bonus paid monthly or annually?
Monthly. It was annual when the Lifetime ISA launched, but bonuses have been claimed and paid monthly since 2018–19.
When exactly will my LISA bonus be paid?
Find which claim period your payment fell into (6th to 5th), add your provider's claim by the 20th of the next month, then a few working days for HMRC to pay and your provider to credit it. That gives you a realistic window.
Do I get the bonus on money I already have in the account?
No. The bonus is paid on new contributions, up to £4,000 per tax year, not on your existing balance or on any interest or growth.
Will the bonus arrive in time to buy my house?
Only if it's already in the account when your conveyancer requests the funds. If you're close to completing, pay in as early as you can and tell your solicitor about anything still pending.
